At a glance
No other country offers the range of the United States: over four thousand degree-granting institutions, from state universities charging moderate tuition to private research schools with substantial funding for graduate students. For STEM graduates, Optional Practical Training gives twelve months of work authorisation, extendable to three years.
Who it suits
Students aiming at research careers, and anyone in a STEM field who wants the longest post-study work window available. It also suits students with strong test scores who can compete for assistantships and tuition waivers.
What it costs
The spread is wide. State universities start around ₹18 lakh a year; top private universities reach ₹45 lakh and beyond. That headline number matters less than it looks, because graduate funding, assistantships and scholarships routinely cut it by a third or more for strong applicants.
What we watch for in your file
- GRE or GMAT strategy. Many programmes are now test-optional, but a good score still moves the funding conversation.
- Visa interview preparation. The F-1 interview is short and decided on your answers about intent, funding and ties to India.
- Application timing. US deadlines are early. December and January for the following August.
Deadlines to plan around
Fall intake is the main one. Applications close between December and February, which means test preparation needs to be finished by October of the previous year. Start fifteen months out.
